Description
The Statue of Robert Hall, located in De Montfort Square, was created in 1871 by sculptor J. B. Philip. This statue features a standing figure in stone with a raised arm, set on a tall circular pedestal made of polished granite. Robert Hall, who lived from 1764 to 1831, was born in Arnesby near Leicester. He was a Baptist clergyman and a notable preacher who advocated for freedom of the press. Influenced by the French Revolution, he spoke out against corrupt government and was a supporter of Joseph Priestley. The statue is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 11 (odd) and No. 55 on New Walk, as well as Nos 98 to 104 (even) New Walk, De Montyford House, and Nos 77 to 97 (odd) Princess Road, with the latter being a building of local interest.
