Description
The Lythe War Memorial is located at the top of Lythe Bank within the churchyard of St Oswald's Church, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial features a 3-meter high octagonal limestone shaft topped with a heavily stylised four-sided lantern head that depicts Christ crucified, along with symbols of the Passion. The base of the memorial consists of a cuboid limestone plinth with a chamfered top edge, which rests on a simple, low, two-stage base. The plinth is inscribed on its first face with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The second face lists names and commemorates "SEVEN UNKNOWN SAILORS BURIED AT LYTHE 1914-1918," with the inscription, "UNTO GOD'S GRACIOUS MERCY WE COMMIT THEM. THE LORD BLESS THEM AND KEEP THEM. THE LORD LIFT UP THE LIGHT OF HIS COUNTENANCE UPON THEM AND GIVE THEM PEACE BOTH NOW AND FOR EVERMORE AMEN." The third face reads, "REMEMBER THEM O GOD AND BRING THEM UNTO GLORY THROUGH THE SUFFERING AND DEATH OF THE CAPTAIN OF OUR SALVATION."
