Description
The war memorial in Knottingley, likely built in the 1920s, is made of rock-faced white granite and features a bronze statue. It has a square section and consists of a pillar raised on a pedestal made up of four stepped blocks, each higher than the one below. The third and fourth blocks have lettered panels on the front and sides that read: "IN GLORIOUS AND EVERLASTING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF KNOTTINGLEY WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-1918 1939-1945" on the front of the lower block, along with names on the sides, and names on all three sides of the upper block. The pillar is topped with a moulded cap and a statue of a flying angel, which stands with one foot on a ball, wearing a flowing dress, with outspread wings, and arms raised holding a wreath and a trumpet.
