Description

The war memorial near the junction of Doncaster Road and Clifton Lane was built in 1922 by Major J. E. Knight of Rotherham. It features a granite base supporting an ashlar sandstone monument. The large cenotaph has a curtain wall at the back. The plinth is inscribed with 'THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 / AND / THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945', while the shaft bears the quotation "IF I SHOULD DIE, THINK ONLY THIS OF ME: THAT THERE'S SOME CORNER OF A FOREIGN FIELD THAT IS FOR EVER ENGLAND". The shaft is decorated with wreaths and has a bronze sword on each side.

Above, an offset upper stage displays upright palm leaves carved on the corners and the words 'FOR / REMEMBRANCE' beneath a stylised sarcophagus adorned with swags and a cornice, topped with a bronze brazier featuring an eternal flame. The curtain wall at the rear is flanked by end piers that support 13 bronze panels, which bear dedications and the names of the 1,304 men from Rotherham who lost their lives in the 1914-1918 war. The memorial was unveiled on Sunday, November 26th, 1922.
