Description

Wellgate Old Hall is a house dating from the late 17th century, with a restoration plaque noting the year 1679. It is constructed of coursed rubble sandstone and features a 20th-century cement-tile roof. The building has two storeys and five bays, with a prominent three-bay pediment at the center. It is characterized by large quoins and tall, double-chamfered mullioned windows that have 20th-century casements. The second bay has a 20th-century double door with weathered moulding on the quoined jambs. The central bays contain two-light windows, while the end bays have three-light windows. A first-floor band serves as a door lintel, and the first-floor windows mirror those on the ground floor. There is an eaves cornice, and the pediment is supported by ashlar brackets, featuring a moulded architrave around an oculus in the tympanum. The roof is hipped.

At the rear, the building mirrors the front but has unrestored ground-floor windows with dripstones and lacks a first-floor band. The interior is from the 20th century and previously included a large fireplace arch; a Tudor-arched fireplace is now displayed in the forecourt. The hall occupies a significant manorial site that may be linked to St. James' Chapel, which was located opposite. Reused timbers from the building have been tree-ring dated to 1479, according to P. F. Ryder's notes in the County Ancient Monuments and Sites Record in Sheffield.
