Description

The Feoffees is a charity school that has been converted into a public house, dating from 1776, with a 20th-century addition to the rear right. Designed by John Platt, the building is constructed from coursed, dressed red sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof.

The facade is symmetrical, with two storeys and four windows on the first floor. A block set back to the left has two additional windows on the first floor. The central section of the building projects forward and includes a central door set in a round-arched recess, which has a swept-shouldered architrave and a cornice below a panel inscribed 'THIS CHARITY SCHOOL / WAS ERECTED BY / THE FEOFFEES / IN THE YEAR 1776'.

The flanking windows are fitted with 4-pane casements that have projecting sills and flat arches. The outer bays also feature similar casements beneath round arches. A sill band on the first floor connects the smaller 4-pane casements, which have wedge lintels. The central round-arched recess is composed of two orders and extends into a tympanum, with a pediment formed by a plain projecting band.

The block set back to the left includes a single-storey porch, which is flanked by pilaster strips beside a doorway that has a swept-shouldered architrave. The frieze is cut to form voussoirs, topped by a heavy pediment. To the left of the porch is a 4-pane casement, and a sill band links similar windows on the first floor. The building is topped with hipped roofs.
