Description

Nos 25 and 27 High Street are part of the Old Three Cranes Inn, now functioning as a shop. The building has a timber-framed core consisting of two sections: one from the 15th century and the other from the late 16th or early 17th century. It has been significantly altered, with a 20th-century addition to the rear. The front elevation is stuccoed, and the roof is covered with Welsh slate. The structure features two timber-framed bays that run parallel to High Street and a 1.5-bay framed wing at the back. It stands three storeys high, with two windows on the first floor. The ground floor has modern shop windows, while the first floor features two tripartite sash windows in wooden frames, with 12-pane sashes flanked by 8-pane sashes; the central sash on the left has been altered. A jetty is indicated by coving just above the windows. The second-floor windows mirror those on the first floor and have moulded sills. There are boxed projections below two gables with plain copings.

Inside, much of the timber framing is concealed. The first-floor rooms contain a chamfered spine beam that is partly encased in plaster. The second-floor front rooms have oak floorboards and some exposed wallposts. In the rear wing, one wallpost and part of a coved canopy are visible. Extensive archaeological investigations prior to the construction of the 20th-century rear addition revealed late-medieval features in the rear wing, including curved downbraces from wallposts to the mid-rail, part of a coved dais canopy, and a collar-rafter roof. This building is significant as the last surviving example of a medieval urban house in Rotherham and the only known example of a dais canopy in South Yorkshire. Detailed survey notes are available in the County Ancient Monuments and Sites Record in Sheffield.
