Description

Number 12 Wellgate is a shop building from the early 19th century. It is constructed of stuccoed ashlar sandstone and has a Welsh slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and features four windows on the first floor. The modern shop front is flanked by old wooden Greek Doric half columns. To the right, there is a large square-headed carriage entrance. A continuous wooden frieze with triglyphs and a mutule cornice runs along the top. The first floor has tall sash windows with glazing bars, while there is no window above the carriageway. The second floor has similar windows that feature recessed aprons and a moulded band above. The cornice has a blocking course that terminates at dies and rises to a plinth between the second and third bays. A straight joint above the carriage entrance indicates a short matching extension to the original facade.
