Description

This lamp standard is set on a garden wall opposite the junction with Mansfield Road in Rotherham. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of sandstone with a cast-iron finial. The structure features a square plinth block leading to a tapered column, which has a domed top topped with a small ball finial adorned with out-curled leaves. Originally, it supported a bracket and an oil lamp that provided street lighting before gas street lamps were introduced in 1833. This lamp standard is believed to be the only surviving example in Rotherham.
