Description
The Roman remains resited to the rear of Clifton House consist of the remains of Roman granaries from the Templeborough fort, dating to the early 2nd century. These remains were relocated in 1916 after excavations at the original site in 1877-78 and 1916. The structure is made of sandstone and includes fragmentary remains of the portico and colonnaded verandah of a pair of granaries, which are now displayed in their original orientation and layout. One complete column of the portico has been re-erected, along with fragments and bases of other columns. The colonnaded verandah is represented by a sill wall with bases worked on the plinth blocks. Additional associated remains are scattered randomly in the adjacent garden bed.
