Description
The gate piers and linking walls opposite the junction with Middle Lane are likely from around 1786 and were designed by John Carr for Joseph Walker, making them contemporary with Eastwood House, which was demolished in the 1920s. Constructed from ashlar sandstone, the structure features two end piers with curved walls that connect to a pair of more elaborate gate piers, although the gates have been removed. The design includes a continuous plinth, with each pier showcasing a monolithic, rusticated shaft that has a sunken panel in a raised strip on the front face and fluting beneath a band. The end piers are topped with domes, while the gate piers feature a frieze with paterae and a cornice, which is surmounted by carved bowls that have been reset. The left pier is inscribed with 'EASTWOOD', and the right pier is inscribed with 'HOUSE'. The linking walls have square-cut copings.
