Description
The Old School of Science and Art, now used as offices, was built in 1888 and enlarged in 1902. It was designed by E. I. Hubbard. The building features a sandstone ashlar facade and is two storeys high, with a layout of four, three, two, three, and two bays. The three-bay sections are recessed and flank a prominent entrance. The facade includes thinly-applied Ionic details and a ground-floor string course.
The main entrance has double doors topped by a stained-glass fanlight that depicts a female artist holding a palette. This is framed by a keyed archivolt and paired pilasters, with the date 'SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ART' inscribed beneath the frieze and a shallow segmental pediment above. The entrance entablature extends across the entire elevation. The outer bays are marked by pilasters at the divisions and feature recessed panels beneath the shared sills of casement windows in architraves. There is a basement door beneath the far right window and a passageway flanked by pilasters to the far left.
On the first floor, the entrance feature includes two tall casements in architraves beneath recessed panels, also flanked by pilasters. Above this is a pediment topped with a statue of Queen Victoria, sculpted by Gilmour of Sheffield. The remaining bays are divided by pilasters, each containing a round-headed casement with a keyed archivolt, linked by a moulded impost band, with a narrower window to the far left above the passageway. The building is finished with a plain frieze, cornice, and a coped parapet with dies at the principal bay divisions.
Inside, there is a lobby screen featuring an etched-glass panel that displays the Rotherham arms and the words 'School of Science'.
