Description

The gate piers at the entrance to Clifton Park from Clifton Grove date from the late 18th century and are constructed of ashlar sandstone. They consist of a pair of tall main piers that are connected to much-shortened outer piers by a dwarf wall. The main piers are rusticated and corniced, topped with urns that feature a foliate-carved base and swags beneath a nulled rim, although the left urn is damaged. These piers are the last surviving entrance to the estate that was contemporary with Clifton House, which was built for Joshua Walker in 1783.
