Description
The Old Toll House, dating from around 1804 and now serving as a house, is located on the east side of the Old Great North Road in Ferrybridge. This toll house features coursed dressed sandstone and a slate roof. Its cruciform plan consists of a two-unit main range that is positioned at right angles to the road, with single-unit side wings. The building is one and two storeys high and has five bays arranged symmetrically.
The two-storey, three-bay canted center includes a six-panel door with a three-pane overlight, flanked by a sashed window on each side, with the upper leaf containing eight panes and no glazing bars in the lower part. A deep band at the first floor extends across the single-storey wings, which have similar windows. The first floor of the center features square windows, with the central window being sashed while the others have been altered. All the windows now have modern louvred pseudo-shutters. The center is topped with a low-pitched hipped roof that has a five-flue lateral chimney on the ridge.
