Description

Pear Tree Cottage is likely the former kitchen of a manor house, dating from the 17th century or earlier, and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of magnesian limestone rubble with a rendered finish and features a slate roof. Originally a single-cell plan, it now has 2½ storeys with lean-to additions on the north and east sides. The openings have been changed; the doorway is now on the left side of the south front, with one window on each floor to the right. The left return wall also has one window on each floor, with the ground floor window restored to its original opening.

Inside, the cottage has notable features including a very deep inglenook fireplace with a massive stop-chamfered lintel, an original tapering chimney with a rubble smoke head, and two arched bread ovens on the right side of the rear wall. There is also a similar opening of uncertain purpose on the left side of the back wall, along with a board door to the left. A stop-chamfered spine beam is supported on a timber pad and the bressummer, with exposed joists. Additionally, there is a restored three-light window in the west wall, featuring original jambs and lintel, and restored wooden diamond mullions. On the left splay of this window, there is a graffito of a sailing boat, which may date from the 18th century or earlier.
