Description
This is a milepost located approximately 100 metres south of the West Bretton traffic island. It dates from the mid to late 19th century and features a cast-iron triangular front mounted on a stone post with a rounded top. The raised letters on the milepost indicate the directions and distances: "BARNSLEY & GRANGEMOOR ROAD BRETTON WEST" and "BARNSLEY HUDDERSFIELD 7 MILES 9+ MILES BRETTON + MILE." This milepost marks the route of the Barnsley and Grangemoor Turnpike road, which was established between 1758 and 1759.
