Description
Estate House, built around 1840 for the Bretton Estate, is constructed of ashlar with a Welsh slate roof. The building features a main range with three bays and one bay deep, accompanied by two lower rear wings. It stands two storeys tall with a symmetrical three-bay facade, where the narrower central bay is slightly set back and gabled. The facade is adorned with clasping octagonal buttresses that rise to form pinnacles. A central pointed-arched doorway is flanked by slender lights, all beneath a dripmould. The windows are chamfered 2-light designs with hoodmoulds and 8-pane sashes. Moulded bands run along the parapet, featuring a quatrefoil at the apex of the gable. The left and right returns of the building are similarly gabled. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing to the left and a single-storey central wing, which may be a later addition, both made of coursed squared stone and gabled with kneelers and copings. From the parapet, a symmetrical arrangement of octagonal ashlar stacks rises in groups of 1, 4, 2, 4, and 1. The interior has not been inspected. Originally, the house was occupied by John Brackenridge, the land agent for the estate.
