Description

Archway Lodge in Bretton Park, including the flanking walls, is a gateway lodge built between 1805 and 1806 by William Atkinson for Colonel Thomas Richard and Diana Beaumont. The structure is made of ashlar and has two storeys with symmetrical three-bay front and rear facades. A giant central round archway is flanked by fluted Roman Doric columns that support a full entablature and blocking course. The side bays project slightly and feature single 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor, while the first floor has limestone panels with relief carvings of biblical scenes. Simple iron gates with dog bars are present, along with low, small wings on each side. The walls sweep forward and end in square piers. There are 20th-century additions to the rear of the side wings. Inside the archway, there is a doorway on each side, with the right side featuring a 6-panel door and a sunk panel above each door.
