Description
The School House, also known as West Bretton Primary School, is a school house built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with some alterations. It is constructed of red brick and features a stone slate roof. The building has a symmetrical facade with a three-bay gabled center section flanked by lower three-bay side wings. It stands two stories tall, with single-storey wings.
The central bay is highlighted by a round-arched sunk panel, and there is a doorway located to the right. The tall windows have 20th-century casements and are topped with brick flat arches. Originally, the doorway was positioned in the center. There are shorter first-floor windows on the left and right, set on a sill band at the impost level of the arch. The facade is completed with a bracketed pediment made of brick and slightly projecting lateral stacks. The left wing contains a blind center window, while a 20th-century addition to the right wing is not considered of special interest.
At the rear, the main range features a pediment similar to the front, along with a round-arched stair window to the left and a small single-storey addition to the main range. The interior has not been inspected.
