Description

The footbridge at Garforth station is a railway station footbridge made of cast and wrought iron, dating from around 1900. It features a standard design typical of the North Eastern Railway, consisting of an elliptical arch divided into four sections, each with roundels at the center. The decorative railings on the steps include crossed bars between iron balusters. The steps return to the east on either side of the bridge and lead up to the road above on the north side. An additional inner line of metal railings has been added to the steps, with horizontal bars between posts.

Garforth station was originally opened by the Leeds and Selby Railway in 1834, leased by the York and North Midland Railway in 1840, and purchased outright in 1844. It became part of the North Eastern Railway when it was formed in 1854. The station was designed for four lines of track, although only two were constructed at that time, as illustrated by this footbridge. The footbridge was added to the station around 1900, following the use of the adjacent road bridge prior to its installation.
