Description
Virginia House and pump is a house and pump located on North Grange Road in Headingley, dating from the early 19th century with later 19th-century additions. The main facades are built of ashlar, while the rear and later walls are made of coursed squared gritstone. The building features a slate hipped roof and includes a cast-iron and wooden pump.
The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of windows on the first floor, with two windows flanking a central bay that is set back on both the left and right sides. There is an off-centre single-storey porch supported by Doric pillars, with narrow side windows. To the left, there is a shallow square bay window with three lights, and to the right, a former sash window with a plain lintel. The first floor has similar windows with canopied plate-glass sashes and a sill band. The recessed bay features a 16-pane sash window on the first floor. The building has a moulded eaves cornice and a shallow blocking course, with large corniced stacks located at the rear of the ridge on both sides.
On the right return, there is a bay window similar to the one at the front, with plain sashes and later alterations to the right. The rear of the house includes what is likely the original three-storey, three-bay wing with four-pane sashes in stone surrounds. The pump is located in a wooden casing at the centre, flanked by an infill block with recessed double doors below a fluted projecting four-light curved bay window. To the left, there is a two-storey canted bay window, and a window altered to serve as a fire escape is situated far left. The interior has not been inspected.
