Description

50 and 52 Headingley Lane is a semi-detached house that was being used as a school and polytechnic premises at the time of listing. It dates from the mid-19th century, with later alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate hipped roof. It has two storeys and a symmetrical south front with a window arrangement of 1:2:1. The two central windows project and are topped with a large pediment. There are added canted bay windows on the ground floor, which have large three-light windows between them and a balustrade above. The first-floor windows are fitted with plate-glass sashes and have architraves with an entablature and cornice. The eaves are decorated with a modillion cornice, and there are large corniced ridge stacks flanking the central bay and at each end of the building.

On the left return, which is No.52, there are three bays with a central six-panel door that has an overlight featuring interlaced glazing bars. This door is set in a stone surround with a shallow pediment and acroteria. The flanking windows and those on the first floor have plain surrounds. The 1850 Ordnance Survey map shows the pair of houses with a drive on each side leading to the rear service buildings and a dividing wall through the front garden. The interior has not been inspected.
