Description
The boundary wall with a gateway to Holmfield was built around 1835 for J Calvert. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and ashlar, featuring a wrought-iron gate and an overthrow with a lantern frame. The wall is approximately 100 meters long and 2 meters high, topped with rounded coping. There is a narrow pedestrian gateway located about midway along the wall. The gate piers are monolithic, standing around 2.5 meters high, square in shape with shallow round-arched insets on their exposed faces and topped with stepped pyramid capstones. The attached overthrow is curved, adorned with scroll decoration and a square lantern frame. The gate is designed in a Gothic tracery style, complete with bars, dog bars, and bud finials. This structure is included for its group value.
