Description

A pair of semi-detached houses dated 1870, located at Ashwood Villas, Headingley, Leeds. The houses are constructed of rock-faced coursed gritstone with ashlar detailing, and have a fish-scale slate roof. They are two storeys with attics, arranged with three bays, the right bay projecting slightly and topped with a gable. The style is Gothic Revival.

The central door is set within a porch featuring a hipped slated roof. Flanking the door are 6-light mullioned canted bay windows. The first floor features a carved stone plaque with interlaced lettering, “IW 1870,” on the left. The windows on the first floor are single and paired sashes, with a single-light window in the gable. A dormer has been added to the left side of the roof. Gable copings and stone gable finials are present.

The left return features a projecting single gabled bay which extends beyond the frontage of No.46 Headingley Lane. This return includes ground-floor sashes supported by a stepped buttress, which in turn supports a 3-light oriel window above, alongside a narrower window.

No.46 Headingley Lane has a central panelled door with a moulded Gothic arch and hoodmould over an overlight. It has plate-glass sashes in ashlar surrounds, a 4-light bay window on the ground floor to the left, and a 3-light window to the right. The first floor has a pattern of 2, 1, and 2 lights, while a wooden 2-light gabled dormer features cusped lights and carved barge-boards. There is a gable coping and a large stack to the left and on the rear of the ridge. The interior has not been inspected.
