Description
The garden wall, gate piers, and steps to Virginia House are boundary features from the early 19th century, with possible alterations from the later 19th century. The walls are constructed of coursed squared gritstone and ashlar, topped with rounded stone copings. The gate piers are made of softer sandstone, and there are stone steps leading to the entrance gates. These features enclose the gardens of Virginia House on the west and south sides, adjacent to North Grange Road and Headingley Lane. The overall length of the wall is approximately 100 meters, with the northern end reaching about 5 meters in height, sloping down twice. Beyond the gate piers, the lower section of the wall is around 2 meters high, transitioning from squared rubble to ashlar at the corner with Headingley Lane. The gate piers are square in section, featuring a moulded plinth, recessed panels with a carved flower in a roundel, a moulded cornice and entablature, and a gabled capstone. There is a flight of seven steps with ashlar flanking walls and square-section terminals topped with moulded capstones. This structure is included for its group value.
