Description

The Pump Room is a former pump-house, now a house, dating from around 1800, with alterations and extensions made in the late 20th century. It is constructed from a timber frame with brick infill and has an old tile hipped roof. The building has a rectangular plan with projections on the north-west and south-east sides, and the south-east projection features single-storey extensions on either side.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a very tall brick plinth and wide overhanging eaves. There are two chimneys topped with clay pots. Most of the windows are 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars. The entrance front, facing south-east, has a single-bay central projection that includes an original two-light leaded window with Y-tracery and a pointed arch head. Below this window is a planked church door with a pointed head. On the first floor, there is one small and one larger replica window on either side, and on the ground floor, there are two two-light windows on either side. The timber frame is exposed on all four fronts and consists of reused timbers with many carpenter's marks that are out of sequence. An inscription on the lintel over the planked wooden door on the right return reads "PAX INTRANTIBVS SALVS EXEVNTIBVS."

The interior has been significantly altered in the late 20th century but still retains a central space with a staircase that rises to the second floor. The pump-house previously contained an old Physic Well, which is now covered. It originally consisted of one large room that housed the well and extended the full height of the building. The porch projection on the entrance front is divided into two storeys, with the upper storey opening into a large room.
