Description
This is a milepost, likely from the mid-19th century, located on Wakefield Road in Swillington. It is made of stone and features cast-iron plates. The stone post has a triangular shape with a flat semicircular head. Cast-iron plates with raised lettering are bolted onto the head and both outer faces of the post. The head is inscribed with "WAKEFIELD & ABERFORD" around the circumference, along with "ROAD SWILLINGTON." The side plates provide distance information, stating "WAKEFIELD and ABERFORD 7 MILES" and "OULTON 6 MILES."
