Description
The Boer War Memorial, located to the southeast of St Bartholomew's Church, was erected in 1904. It is constructed from ashlar and has a square plan with a low chamfered stone base. The lower section features three steps, and the second step includes a carved relief depicting rifles, wreaths, and a helmet. The middle section bears an inscription within an arched panel that reads: "This monument was erected by public subscription in memory of 6119 Pte. Joshua C Mellor, Vol 1st West Riding Regt. Died at Bloemfontein, June 22nd 1900, 9627 Pte. Wm Hey of the 2nd Scots Guards Died at Harrismith Decr. 28th 1900, 3845 Corpl. Thos. Dearnley Jany. 3rd 1901." Above this, the monument is topped with a moulded cap that supports an octagonal broached spire, which is adorned with a large ornate finial.
