Description
The Church of St Bartholomew is a large Neo-perpendicular church built in 1895 by architect C Hodgson Fowler, with a tower added in 1911. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a pitched slate roof. The church has a four-tier west tower and a five-bay nave that includes a clerestory and lean-to buttressed aisles. The chancel consists of three bays, with a lean-to chapel on the south side and a vestry on the north side. There are porches on both the south and north sides.
The church is adorned with large three-light traceried aisle windows, complemented by two-light windows in the clerestory, with two windows per bay. The east window is a large five-light traceried design, and there is also a large traceried west window. The west tower features four reducing tiers and angle buttresses, a clock face on all four sides, and large louvred traceried openings in the bell chamber. The tower is topped with a crenellated parapet and crocketted pinnacles.
Inside, there is a five-bay arcade on quatrefoil piers on both the north and south sides, and a tall chancel arch supported by similar responds. The chancel screen and rood loft are made of well-carved oak by J H Gibbons FRIBA from Manchester and London, executed by Messrs Boulton & Co of Cheltenham, and were dedicated in 1913. The interior also features carved oak reveals and a painted panel by Hildred Harpin AFICA. Additionally, there is an octagonal font with a canopy, created in 1895 and restored in 1968.
