Description
15 Town Gate is a building dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century that has undergone significant alterations. It was formerly two dwellings and a public house. The structure is made of coursed rubble, with some parts rendered, and features a pitched stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high.
On the south elevation, the ground floor includes a partially blocked doorway with a very deep lintel, stone surrounds, and tie-stones, all with chamfered reveals. There is also a five-light stone mullioned window with double chamfering, although two of the mullions have been removed, and another five-light stone mullioned window where one light is blocked. The first floor has two five-light stone mullioned windows, one of which has chamfered surrounds.
The north elevation displays various window openings, some with rendered surrounds, while to the west, the openings date from the mid to late 19th century. This building was previously known as the Shoulder of Mutton Inn, Hare and Hounds, and White Hart, with its license surrendered in 1910. Information about the building is sourced from 'Bygone Marsden' by L B Whitehead.
