Description
No. 84 Fitzwilliam Street is a mid-19th century building constructed of ashlar stone, featuring a hipped slate roof and rising four storeys. The eaves cornice is supported by paired brackets, and there is a balustrade above the end bays. The building showcases a moulded cornice and has 13 ranges of sash windows, which have moulded voussoirs and imposts. The first-floor windows are segment-headed, while those on the third floor are round-arched. The two easternmost ranges of windows are paired and slightly project forward, and the central section also breaks forward. Above this central section is a tower topped with a square dome and a tall finial, flanked by pilasters and consoles, with a moulded cornice. Each side of the tower features two round-arched sashes with moulded imposts and voussoirs.
At the east end, there is a carriage entrance with spur stones and doors that have 12 moulded panels. The central portal is supported by two granite columns with foliage capitals, and in front of these are fluted cast iron columns with gadrooned tops and ball finials. The building is adorned with elaborate cast iron work, including window boxes on the first floor and beneath the sills on the third floor, as well as simpler window boxes on the third floor and a continuous rail along the cornice over the first floor. The ground floor transitions to a basement at the west end, where there are cast iron railings topped with fleur-de-lys finials.
