Description

9 Bath Street is an 1839 building, originally known as the Huddersfield Hall of Science. The foundation stone was laid by Robert Owne. It later served as a meeting place for local Chartists, led by Feargus O'Connor. The building is constructed of York stone, with a dressed facade and random-coursed rubble returns. It was originally three storeys, although it was subsequently divided horizontally without alterations to the window arrangement. A slightly advanced central section features a pediment. The facade has five sash windows with glazing bars, the central window with an arched head, plain architrave, extrados, and keystone. A plain rectangular panel within the pediment has apron pieces and a defaced inscription. A doorway is centrally located on the first floor, featuring plain architraves, a slight cornice hood, a rectangular barred fanlight, and a six-panelled door. Stone steps lead to the entrance, accompanied by later wrought iron handrails. The ground floor contains two plain doorways with panelled doors and fanlights. A string course, blocking course, parapet, and moulded cornice complete the exterior, topped by slates.
