Description
Oakes School is a mid-19th century building constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a pitched slate roof. It features coped gables topped with iron finials and has a complex plan with multiple gables. The windows are primarily either mullion and transom crosses or mullioned with Caernarvon lintels. The doors have either two or four-centred arches, with moulded surrounds and hoodmoulds, and some windows include cusped oculi. The building has buttresses, and the most prominent feature is the tower above the boys' entrance, which rises four storeys. This tower includes string courses, clocks on the second floor, a machicolated cornice, a timber third floor with studs and diagonal planking, and a very steep pyramidal roof with sprockets.
