Description

The front tower at Wellington Mills dates from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a hipped slate roof featuring a decorative sprocketed cresting and elaborate cast ironwork. The tower rises four storeys with an attic. It has a moulded eaves cornice supported by brackets, continuous sill bands, and impost bands. The facades incorporate two ranges of round-arched sash windows, each with a keystone. A stone-fronted gabled dormer is present, featuring an oculus. A segment-headed arch at ground floor level is embellished with vermiculated voussoirs and moulded imposts, above which is a frieze bearing “Wellington Mills” incised in a serifed font. Cast iron gates with fleur-de-lys finials and spur stones are also part of the structure.
