Description

Fielden School of Art is a former art school built around 1871, likely designed by John Gibson, who also created Centre Vale House around the same time. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a slate roof in the Gothic Revival style. It consists of a single-storey central hall flanked by two-storey cross-wings on either end, running from north to south.

The west face has five bays, each topped with gables that have copings and moulded finials. The first bay features a canted bay window with cusped lights and sunken spandrels, above which are two similar lights with a quatrefoil at the apex set in a sunken pointed arch. The central three bays have tall windows with three lights on the outer sides and four lights in the middle, all adorned with decorative circles above. A gabled porch is positioned between the fourth and fifth bays, featuring a pointed arched doorway. The fifth bay is part of the cross-wing, which includes a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window above, both with shouldered arches.

The right-hand return wall has three bays, each with gabled dormers that contain two-light windows. A central doorway is sheltered by a gabled porch with a pointed arch, hoodmould, coping, and finial, flanked by windows with three cusped lights and relieving arches above. The east face mirrors this design, with the second and fourth bays featuring curvilinear tracery and a central bay showcasing a large rose window with a cusped star of David.
