Description
The war memorial in Centre Vale Park consists of three statues, created in 1921 by Gilbert Bayes. Two smaller sculptures, made of Portland stone, represent children and are titled "The Lamp of Memory" and "The Shield of Honour." The central figure is a tall statue of St. George, also in Portland stone, depicted holding his sword after defeating a four-headed dragon, which stands on a globe supported by maidens dressed in Greek attire. This memorial is a notable example of early 20th-century sculpture. The statues are set on a plinth surrounded by a horse-shoe shaped water basin, with a tall wall behind it that displays the dates 1914-18 and 1939-45, along with an inscription. On either side of the memorial, tablets are engraved with the names of those who fell in the wars.
