Description
The Fielden Statue is a statue of John Fielden, Member of Parliament, located in Centre Vale Park, Todmorden. It was created to celebrate the 'Ten Hours Act' of 1847 and was designed by J H Foley, Royal Academician, in 1863. The statue was cast in bronze by Elkington and Company and delivered in 1869. It stands on a granite plinth that is inscribed with the date of Fielden's birth, 17th January 1784, on one side, and the date of his death, 29 May 1849, on another. The statue depicts Fielden in contemporary dress, holding a document that is likely the 'Ten Hours Act' which he initiated. Originally, the statue was located on the side of the Town Hall before being moved to Fielden Square and then to its current position.
