Description

Christ Church is a Commissioners church dating from 1832, designed by L. Vulliamy. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings, a slate roof, and a north porch. The building is in the Early English Lancet style and comprises a five-bay nave. Architectural features include angle buttresses, a plinth, a string, a corbel table, and two-light windows with offset buttresses set between. The three-bay north porch has a string that rises over a pointed arched doorway. The parapet is topped with pyramidal finials and a cross at its centre. There are two-light clerestory windows and finials to the corners of the aisles and clerestory.

The west tower has canted walls to embrace the staircase to the gallery. The three-stage embattled tower has clasping buttresses. The pointed arched west door is flanked by a stepped window of three tall lights on the second stage, and a two-light belfry with a clock set within a blind arcade on the third stage; buttresses continue upward to form finials. The shallow chancel has angle buttresses to the east only, and an east window of three stepped lights set within a pointed arch with a hoodmould.

Inside, the nave has a pointed arched arcade with octagonal columns and moulded capitals, and a slightly cambered wooden roof. The chancel extends two bays further, with a waggon roof and an elaborate opus sectile mosaic depicting texts invoking the Redeemer and companies of saints, amongst other scenes. A wrought iron chancel screen and gates are present, as is a gallery on three sides. Late 19th-century pews are found throughout the church.
