Description
West Bar and the attached barn is a building that has been converted into three dwellings. It dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The structure is made of hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high and is arranged as a three-cell house.
The first two cells have chamfered mullioned windows, with some mullions removed, consisting of four-light and five-light windows. On the first floor, there is a three-light window flanked by two-light windows. The doorway to the second cell includes tie-stones. The third cell, which was likely added in the 19th century, shows a clear break from the original structure and features a doorway with monolithic jambs, as well as a three-light flat-faced mullioned window on each floor.
The attached barn has composite jambs and a square lintel with a chamfered surround for the cart entry and a mistal door that has a quoined lintel. The left-hand return wall includes a doorway for the first cottage, also with tie-stones. There are two stacks at the ridge. Originally, the building consisted of a two-cell house and a separate barn, which has larger masonry and may be slightly older. The gap between these was later filled in by the addition of the third cottage in the 19th century.
