Description
The Church of St. Michael and All Angels, built around 1902, was founded by Mrs. Master-Whitaker of the Holme, Cliviger. It features hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof, showcasing a Gothic/Tudor Revival style. The church includes a nave, aisles, chancel, west tower, north porch, and north transept.
The west tower is three stages high and embattled, with diagonal buttresses that have offsets. It has a clock on the second stage, and the belfry on the third stage features a pointed arch and an octagonal spire. The tower also has a semi-octagonal vice. The nave is five bays wide and has three-light Tudor arched clerestorey windows. The aisles have a lean-to roof, buttresses, and three flat-headed windows, each with three lights.
A gabled porch that breaks forward features a Gothic arch. The transeptal chapel has windows with two and three lights, showcasing cusped arches and panel tracery. The chancel contains two-light flat-headed windows and angle buttresses with offsets. The large east window features panel tracery with arched lights set within a depressed Tudor arch. The west window in the first stage of the tower has a Gothic arch with intersecting tracery.
Inside, the church has an arch-braced queen post roof and a brattished wall plate. The arcade consists of pointed arches supported by colonnettes.
