Description

The Church of St. Michael and All Angels is a church that dates from the early 14th century, with additions from the 18th and mid-19th centuries. It is constructed from squared and irregularly coursed sandstone and features a plain-tiled roof. The nave and chancel are covered by a continuous roof.

On the west wall, there is a window with two trefoil lights and reticulated tracery set in a two-centred chamfered arch. The church has a 19th-century embattled bell turret made of sandstone ashlar. The west doorway, dating from the 15th century, has a hollow moulding leading to a four-centred arch. The south wall contains three windows, each with two trefoil lights and reticulated tracery in a chamfered two-centred arch. The east window features four trefoil lights with reticulated tracery, also in a two-centred chamfered arch, complete with a label and mask stops. The north wall has similar windows and a doorway in a two-centred chamfered arch, which is now blocked.

Inside, the church has an 18th-century coved ceiling and a modillion cornice. The west end is galleried and supported by Doric columns made of stone, with a panelled parapet and dentil cornice. The font, also from the 18th century, is made of stone and has a round bowl on a baluster stem. The pulpit, dating from the 18th century, is square with chamfered corners and sits on a later base, featuring inlay on its sides. There is a 17th-century oak chest with iron fittings. This church may have served as the chancel for a planned chapel associated with the priory of Augustinian Canons founded by William de Clinton in 1336.
