Description

The Church of St. Michael and All Angels is a parish church with a chancel dating from the 15th century, which was restored and extended to the east in the 19th century. The original nave was demolished and replaced by a small west tower in 1765. The tower is constructed of semi-dressed stone with flint galleting, while the chancel is made of flint with stone dressings. Both sections feature lead roofs. The tower consists of two stages and has a battlemented parapet, arched openings to the bell-chamber, and a two-light traceried window above it. All openings in the tower are adorned with Tudor hoodmoulds. The chancel includes diagonal buttresses, a chamfered plinth, and a moulded parapet, with a central carved gargoyle on each side that was reworked in the 19th century. It has two bays of three-light Perpendicular windows, with the southern windows restored around 1980 using plastic stone. The eastern window was completely restored in the 19th century.

Inside, there is a small arch leading to the tower, a blocked squint to the south, a piscina with a hollow-chamfered arch, and 19th-century sedilia and roof. Notable fittings include an early 16th-century screen that has been restored, featuring cusped open panels with spandrels carved with rosettes and lion-heads, now positioned against the west wall. There is also a 19th-century reredos, an octagonal font, stained glass, and some reset medieval floor tiles. The church contains marble wall tablets commemorating Bashewell Grubb from 1666, John Grubb from 1700, and Anne Grubb, a Huguenot exile, from 1721.
