Description

The Church of St. Mary is a parish church located in Bledlow-Cum-Saunderton, rebuilt between 1888 and 1891, while incorporating restored 14th-century windows and doorways. The building is constructed of flint with stone dressings, featuring tiled roofs and a shingled bell-tower, along with a timber-framed porch. It has a two-bay nave with the bell-tower situated in the western bay, a two-bay chancel, a north vestry, and a south porch. The church includes two-light traceried windows, mostly with Y tracery, and the nave has a similar three-light window to the north, along with a single cusped light above the main west window. The east window is a 19th-century three-light traceried design, and the south wall of the chancel features a pair of lights with four-centred heads and a Tudor hoodmould. The south doorway is moulded with carved head label stops, and there are small blocked doorways to the north and south of the chancel, the latter with a chamfered arch and label. The bell-tower has louvred openings and a pyramidal roof.

Inside, the timber frame of the bell-tower likely dates to the 15th century and includes crossed braces. There is a cusped piscina and 19th-century roofs. Notable fittings include a 12th- to 13th-century font, which is a smaller version of the "Aylesbury" type with a fluted bowl, carved foliage frieze, part of a cable moulding, and a later base; a screen that incorporates medieval traceried panels; small medieval floor tiles that have been re-set in the vestry; two painted texts from the 18th to 19th centuries; and 19th-century glass and other fittings. Additionally, there is a small brass featuring a half-figure of Isabella Saunterdon.
