Description

North Ramsden is a house originally divided into two occupations, with an attached barn. The main structure dates to the early 18th century, with later 18th-century additions and an early 19th-century extension. The house is constructed of random rubble, with stone slate and blue slate roofing. It has two storeys. The south front clearly shows three distinct phases of building. The earliest section comprises a pair of cottages, featuring double-chamfered mullioned windows with almost square reveals. The first bay has a former four-light window above a smaller one. A pair of doorways sits at the centre, with composite jambs (the left one being solid), above which is a small square opening. The right-hand bay displays a former six-light window above another, both with king mullions. Quoins are visible at the right-hand end, and there's a brick stack to the gable. To the left, a single-cell cottage with a higher roofline is attached, with quoins visible above the lower roofline. This later cottage has double-chamfered mullioned windows with six lights to both floors (the ground-floor window altered) and a doorway with monolithic jambs. Numerous mullions have been lost from the windows. Two well-dressed stacks rise from the ridge and quoins are present. A barn is attached, notable for its segmental arched doorway. There are coped gables. The rear elevation mirrors the front, with double-chamfered mullioned windows. The barn also features a segmental arched doorway.
