Description
The barn at Lower Ditches is a mid-18th century structure located in an isolated moorland area near a ruined early 18th century farmhouse. It is built from thin coursed rubble and features a stone slate roof. The barn has an aisle to the east and a projecting porch to the west. The corners of the barn are marked by quoins, and there are opposed cart entries with square-headed portals in the aisle. This aisle continues to showcase two tall stone pointed Gothic arches, supported by thin stone voussoirs, and is divided into three bays. The return walls of the barn have square-headed pitching holes located at the apex. Notably, this barn is part of a group of structures that feature pointed stone arches instead of traditional timber trusses.
