Description
The barn at Old Ditcham Farm is a 17th-century structure with some early 19th-century alterations and minor extensions from the mid-19th century. It features walls made of ashlar malmstone, with a tile and brick band above the thickened sections. The openings are designed as projecting panels of brickwork, topped with a plain architrave that extends above the impost level, and includes ventilation slots created by mullions and transoms. The south wall, which dates from the early 19th century, is constructed of flint with brick dressings, while the walls of the minor extensions are made of stone, flint, and brick. The barn has a tiled roof and consists of seven bays, separated by large pointed stone arches that support two levels of purlins, with an intermediate hammer beam for the lower purlins. Each bay contains two round-arched openings, which are also found at each gable end, though these have been filled in. On the north side, there is a prominent central wagon entrance with a gable and corner slab buttresses from the early 19th century, along with later entrances located at the second, fourth (on the south side), and sixth bays.
