Description

Hurst Barn is a late 17th-century threshing barn with 19th-century outbuildings situated on Chichester Road, Harting. The barn is timber-framed and is externally clad in clunch with brick dressings, topped with a hipped roof covered in corrugated iron sheeting. The central cart entrance has a pentice above. The barn’s interior comprises five aisles, supported by jowled upright posts set into concrete padstones. It has an angled Queen strut roof with staggered purlins and pegged rafters, lacking a ridge piece. Many original, roughly hewn timbers remain in the roof. To the east are two low, parallel outbuildings. The northern outbuilding is constructed with weather boarding on stud walls, while the southern one has a combination of stud walls and clunch facing with brick dressings. Both outbuildings are roofed with handmade clay tiles.
