Description
The barn at Old House Farm is a structure likely built in the early 18th century, incorporating some earlier timber elements. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding, resting on a plinth made of malmstone rubble, which has brick quoins and a top course. The front right section has been rebuilt in brick, while the right return displays brick in header bond above the plinth and galleted malmstone at the rear. The barn has a hipped roof covered with plain tiles.
This fully-aisled barn consists of five bays, with a lower ground level on the right and central cart entries on opposite sides. The front entry rises through the eaves beneath a hipped gable, and there is a board hatch on the right and an inserted stable door on the left. An additional stable door has been inserted into the right return.
Inside, the barn boasts a well-preserved timber frame, featuring sharply-jowled arcade posts set on timber pads and brick piers, with straight braces connecting to the arcade plates and tie-beams. The wall studs are arranged in vertical panels without rails. The roof includes raking queen posts that support clasped purlins and old rafters, with no ridge piece. The interior also contains a central threshing floor.
