Description

The gateway in the grounds of Calderdale Borough Sowerby Bridge Area Office is an early to mid-19th century structure featuring flanking walls. Constructed from rubble brought to course, the gateway has a wall that extends approximately 2 meters to the west and about 5 meters at a right angle to the south. The north side, facing the garden, showcases a quoined pointed-arched gateway with double gates, flanked by slightly projecting embattled towers that are square in plan, each featuring a tall arrow slit. There is a continuous ashlar band on plain blocks, with a similar band at the top of the towers. The lower band continues across the embattled wall, which has flat-coped merlons and steps down to the south. On the west side of the south wall, there is a blocked quoined doorway.
