Description

The Church of St George is a Grade II listed building located on Haugh End Lane in Sowerby Bridge. It was constructed between 1839 and 1840 by Edward Walsh and is built from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof, designed in the Norman style. The church features a west tower, a nave with a north vestry, and a chancel with an apse.

The tower has three stages, with pilaster buttresses and a door and one window on each side of each stage, topped by a parapet. The nave consists of five bays, defined by pilaster buttresses, and has round-arched windows with shafts that have cushion capitals and zig-zag ornamentation above. The nave's parapet is supported by simple block corbels. The chancel has one bay with an apse and added aisles, featuring a door to the north and a window to the south. The east end displays three stepped round-arched windows, all with hoodmoulds.

Inside, there is a west gallery supported by two octagonal columns, with a carved Passion scene on the front from 1931. The nave has three round-arched roof trusses on corbelled tiebeams with pendants. The round chancel arch is decorated with zig-zag, nail-head, and billet motifs, along with shafts that have cushion capitals. Notable interior features include fine carved panelling and a seat in the sanctuary, as well as a carved screen between the nave and choir, also dated 1931. The font, which was brought in 1970 from St John the Divine in Thorpe, is octagonal with carved sides and stands on a central column surrounded by eight outer marble colonettes. A pamphlet titled "Sowerby St George's, a brief history" and Kelly's Directory from 1893 provide additional historical context.
